This member of the Olive family blooms more heavily in full sun and will tolerate part shade. Fantastically fringy fragrant blooms in late April to early May. Best transplanted when small; expect a slow growth rate 6-10" height per year, eventually growing 12-20' tall and wide with a multi-stemmed, rounded growth habit. Tolerates clay soils, and even drought in neutral to alkaline soils. Plant along a woodland border or as a specimen tree in your lawn. Dark blue fruits ripen in late summer and are eaten by song birds and mammals. White Fringetree is found growing wild along the brackish waters of the Nanticoke amongst the Bald Cypress, so there is some salt tolerance.

Latin name Chionanthus virginicus.
