Slow growing and long lived. Needs full sun, will not tolerate full shade. Large tree with a narrow to broadly rounded crown, occurs in dry upland woods on upper slopes and ridges, commonly in acid soils, occasionally found in low woods along streams. Rich golden yellow foliage in fall. The common name, Hickory, is from the Powhatan (an Algonquin tribe) Indian word pawhiccori, pockerchickory, pocohicora, pohickery, or powhiccora, which is named for the nut’s oil.

Latin name Carya tomentosa

Fun Facts

It was named Mockernut because of its large fruit and its small nuts.

The Baltimore City Champion Mockernut Hickory was measured in 2017 to be 82' tall with a 67' wide canopy spread. It is growing happily in the lawn of Evergreen House 4545 N Charles Street.
